289 Cobra

Shelby made several different versions of the Cobra, and this one is known as the “289 Cobra,” “Slabside,” or “street car Cobra.” The 289 version was the first iteration of the Cobra, except for a few Cobras that were produced with 260 V8s.

Our client built this car with many unique details to return it to a 1963 specification. The first detail to highlight is the location of the shifter bezel ring, which is offset slightly to the left of the transmission tunnel (the original cars used a “top loader transmission, which required this offset), along with the addition of an ashtray carefully located in the trans tunnel mimicking the original cars.

The client modified the Superformance steering column and relocated the turn signal lever to install a factory “AC” steering column boss and “trafficator” turn/horn switch in the steering wheel center. They also replaced the steering wheel with a flat-style “Motolita” wheel.

Under the hood, they wanted to install a 306 BluePrint engine with raised letter “Cobra” valve covers, intake manifold, and oil pan. They changed the timing cover so the oil dipstick could move to the location found on the original 289 engine. We replaced the car’s plastic oil pressure sensing tube with copper, and a new hard fuel line was installed, similar to the original vehicle. A “Harrison” coolant overflow tank was fitted to the left inner fender, like the original early Cobras.

We finally replaced the Amber turn signal lens with clear ones and added “AC” wheel spinners.

Greg and his team at Time Machines Motorsports are great to work with!
My ’32 streetrod was in need of some TLC and they got her running better than ever.
They work with you to develop a plan based on your needs and keep you informed every step along the way. Far more transparent than anybody I’ve worked with in the past.
Will bring the ’32 back to Greg when it’s time for personal upgrades. 10/10 would highly recommend.
